Mountain Lake Campground and Salmon Run

Summersville Lake is West Virginia’s largest lake, a sprawling 2,800 acres of water with over 60 miles of shoreline. And there are lots of things to do in and around it, from fishing and boating to rock climbing and historic landmarks. We usually make two or three visits to the lake every summer to enjoy camping, outdoor adventure and a little R&R.

On this trip we stayed at Mountain Lake Campground, an ideal campground for families. Every section has playgrounds, they have mini golf, a general store full of toys, a pool, outdoor theater, ice cream and lots of other cool stuff! We setup the tent, played around and told ghost stories by the campfire.

Close by is an area called Salmon Run, which is a road covered by water when the lake was constructed. You can walk on the road right down into the lake! There’s also a boat launch, fish attractant and picnic tables. A great place to spend your day swimming, kayaking, fishing and picnicking.

If you’ve never been swimming in Summersville, you’re missing out. It’s probably the cleanest, clearest water in the eastern US. There’s so much to do that there’s no way we could have done it all in one trip, but these two places alone will make for a full weekend full of adventure.
