Hike #11: Seneca Creek Backcountry - Whispering Spruce Trail

These next two hikes were the introduction to spring that I have been craving. One was short and sweet with killer views, while the other was a bit longer and provided the isolation that only the backcountry could give.

To access these two trailheads, I camped at Spruce Knob Lake Campground. It was a really clean and beautiful place to pitch my tent. Here you can buy firewood from the campground manager and are just a short drive from several trailheads.

Below is a link to a map of the Seneca Creek Backcountry, which I found really useful when planning my hikes and where I would be setting up camp!

2.   Whispering Spruce Trail

3.   38.74327078354312, -79.5350974743362

4.   0.5 miles

5.   15 minutes

My sister and I decided to check out Hike #10 for a quick taste of the Seneca Creek area before heading out the following day for a longer, more challenging hike. This trail may have been short, but it definitely did not disappoint. This trail lead us to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia at an elevation of 4,862 feet. Along this trail we were able to climb an observation tower that provides a full 360° view of the forest around you, and several other noteworthy spots to soak in the mountains.

Though Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, it is very accessible and this trail is good for all skill levels!

Trailhead directions can be found on All Trails or using the coordinates above!
