Hike #10: Big Branch Trail (New River Gorge National Park)

Hike #10 Details:

1.   New River Gorge National Park

2.   Big Branch Trail

3.   37.71763949079559, -80.89317369617477

4.   2.3 miles

5.   1.5 hours

This trail makes you work a little bit harder than the first, with 541 feet of elevation gain. If you want the views first and less of a workout, I recommend hiking this trail clockwise. If you want that challenge, definitely hike it counter-clockwise. I personally enjoy the reward being towards the end of my hike. However, either direction you choose, the second half of your hike will be down-hill.

This trail-head can be kind of tricky to spot, as it’s on the side of the road and if you blink you can miss it. But, there is a parking lot on the opposite side of the road that you can use as a landmark.

If you like waterfalls, this is the trail for you. You will encounter several as well as some fun stream crossings.

Trailhead directions can be found on All Trails or using the coordinates above!

Due to the relatively short distance and the ease of these hikes, all you really need are some snacks and plenty of water. Also, after you’ve soaked in all of the nature that you can handle, the town of Hinton has some great take-out options like The Market. Speaking from personal experience, it’s delicious.
